A promising young stallion oozing with quality , having extravagant paces and classic conformation. his dam Zsa Zsa competed to international level Showjumping before being retied to stud , producing fantastic quality foals she is graded with the KWPN BWB SHB(GB) and WTHBYS Her sire Tolad (sired by Duc de Normandie). Champion of the Studbook Selection 1980. Out of the 357 mares he covered in The Netherlands, 248 foals were born. In June 1984 he was sold to the United States as stallion and showjumper where he qualified for the 1988 olympics ridden by Buddy Brown .He was performance teted in HLP Ermelo 1980 and achieved a score of 177.65 and was ranked 1st of 28 .In 1999/00 he was ranked 293 in the WBFSH. ZSAZSA also has a full brother Opstalans capuccino who competed at international level and was ranked in the WBFSH. Duc De Normandie recieved Keur in 1972 , Preferent in 1975. and of 2318 inseminations produced 1422 foals.Olady II, mare, (foaled April 13 , 1973, sired by Enfant de Normandie) . Western Montana competed both in the sj and eventing ring. Western Knight ran for three seasons - two on the flat winning 1 & 1/4 miles at sandown, 2nd in the hyperion stakes a listed race and fifth in the King George V handicap at royal ascot. One of the gutsiest horses to race in Britain.Grundy was not only a top class performer but a horse with exempelary guts.
Grundy was bred at the Overbury stud at Gloucestershire and purchased on behalf of Milan industrialist Carlo Vittadini. by Keith Freeman for 11,000 guineas at the 1973 Newmarket Sales.
Trained by Peter Walwyn at Lambourn Grundy was unbeaten as a two year old. in his 4 races. As a two year old he was unbeaten in four races and topped the free handicap, he won the dewhurst stakes by six lengths from steel heart who had won the gimcrack and middle park stakes .As a 3 year old Grundy suffered a setback when he was kicked full in the face by a stable companion. His preparation was delayed for the 2000 Guineas where he was beaten by half a length.However this set the road for a brilliant 3 year old career with Pat Eddery astride. After winning the Irish 2000 Guineas Grundy romped home to win the Epsom Derby by 3 lengths from Nobiliary who went on to win the Washington International.
Two weeks later he completed the Epsom-Irish Derby double by winning the Irish equivalent by 2 lengths from King Pellimore. In July Grundy showed the racing world his exceptional courage by winning a tough race from Bustino, a top-class racehorse (1974 St Leger winner). This race is described by racing fans as one of the greatest battles of all time.The 2 horses fought it out for over 2 furlongs having a bitter neck to neck battle.Grundy’s sheer will power won him the day. It was a truly epic duel.
At the end of his career Grundy had earned what was then a record sum of Ł326,422. He was given a timeform rating of 137 which ranked him with great horses. He stood at the national stud at a valuation of 1 million (less than half his international value ) .
Peter Walwyn said of Grundy, “He was a smasher,a hell of a horse.”
